How to paint over cracked wood. Be sure to flex the putty knife to produce a flat surface. Fill in any cracks with spackling paste. Choose a white primer that can double-up as an undercoat.
Using 80 to 100-grit sandpaper remove any loose debris from the cracked area. Wait for the primer to dry and cure. Step 1 Scrape loose chipped paint from the surface using a putty knife or wire brush.
